–New York, NY–

About the Artist:

Lacey Kim was born in South Korea, where she received a BFA degree from Seoul Women’s University. She then went on to complete a Master’s degree at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, followed by an MFA at the Pratt Institute in New York. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Miami, and Seoul.

About the Work:

“My work is expressed through lines. It distances itself from the actual world. The “Line,” among other forms, has been a means and messenger of expressing “my being free”. It has various forms, sometimes curved, other times straight. In addition, it shows a feeling of being sometimes slow and sometimes very fast. I want to express and feel with viewers something that exists not just in one field, but can engender the infiniteness of the world through the language of lines.

I believe that the deep spatial effect created by various layers urges the viewer’s senses to transcend the two-dimensional world of painting. Lines and colors combine to form images with a new potential by meeting one another freely and creating unexpected forms.

When expressing lines in my work, I follow the flow of my unconscious mind, but I believe that unconscious gestures are distinguishable from messy ones: these intuitive gestures are not so much confusing as consistent. The harmony of opposites – conscious and unconscious, real and relative, free flowing and driven by natural rules – is what I am trying to express in my paintings. The mode of expression is itself a paradox between order and entropy.” – Lacey Kim
